La Mama (2008) and Chapel off Chapel (2008 and 2009) seasons extended and SOLD OUT.

    This is what you said:

" There were many moments when in retrospect, I felt I was the sole audience member, so eloquent and engaging was your communication of this epic tale."

" a very moving story, told with the right balance between restraint, humour, pathos and compassion. The humour is so well integrated into the narrative that when it comes, the impact is more powerful."

" You assumed characters with ease, broke the tensions that were built and re created them again. You took care of our welfare so we would last the distance."

"....it was brilliant, funny, sad, moving and kept me engrossed from start to finish.....it was very personal without feeling like we were being imposed upon, more invited to share your journey, good and bad."

" there was hardly a sound from the audience for the whole 75 minutes apart from appreciative gasps and/or chuckles here and there until at the end when you were rewarded with loud and sustained applause."

    What the Reviews Said...

The Age reviewer Martin Ball said:
"It's a simple solo show, where Berger takes on a variety of characters. She begins in the voice of her mother, telling the harrowing story of precarious survival as Jews in German-occupied Poland, before emigrating to Israel and finally to Australia. Scores of characters come to life, each crafted with affection and wry observation. But this is no mere sentimental nostalgia trip, and Berger's honesty in exploring the gamut of family life is a key factor in the success of Hold the Pickle. In terms of performance, Berger's considerable stage experience ensures a confident hold on story and characterisation. There is clearly an extended audience for this show and Berger might find she can hold the pickle for quite a while"

    Kate Herbert, The Herald Sun:
"Cleverly balancing her comic skills with poignant story-telling and delightful characterisations"

Australia's "Calendar Girls" are Lorraine Bayly, Rachel Berger, Rhonda Burchmore,
Cornelia Frances, Jean Kittson, Anna Lee and Amanda Muggleton.

Producer John Frost said, "We searched far and wide, talking to nearly every actress of 'a certain age', and have found an incredible group of woman to bring the most successful British comedy of the past decade to the Australian stage. Calendar Girls is not only hilarious but also profoundly moving and uplifting. UK audiences couldn't get enough of the show and we're sure Australian audiences are going to fall in love with it too."

Calendar Girls is based on the very successful film of the same name starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, which in turn was based on an uplifting and inspiring true story that is quirky, poignant and hilarious. A group of ordinary middle-aged women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women's Institute, do something quite extraordinary. They spark a global phenomenon by persuading one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference! As interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves revealing more than they'd ever planned...

Calendar Girls has played to sold-out audiences on the West End for well over a year, and is the fastest selling regional tour in British theatre history. It has recently been nominated as "Best New Comedy" at the 2010 Olivier Awards. Audiences have been effusive in their praise for the play and its ensemble cast. Critics have said:

"A marvellous, uplifting night at the theatre"
    Daily Mail

"A show whose feelgood factor is sky-high"
    The Guardian

"One of the most enjoyable evenings recent theatre has produced"
    London's Evening Standard

Calendar Girls opens in Brisbane on April 8 at QPAC then transfers to Sydney's Theatre Royal from April 29 and to Melbourne's Comedy Theatre from June 17.
